What I played last night...
Just Cause 2! it was one of the first games i got on Steam, i think, and i got it free with my video card. i also got a free code for Mafia II, but this sounded much more fun.
sometimes, Just Cause 2 is a great for a 1-night-free-for-all. at first, it's not the easiest choice for me, because i get pretty intimidated by Heat. when you cause damage or kill guards, your Heat level goes up and the dictator sends reinforcements out to execute you. alerts, noises, flashing red lights.... makes me more than a little anxious. Heat level rises, blood pressure rises! but! after finally remembering how to play and how to open the map (no, it's not "m," it's f1 for your PDA), i soon re-realized that if you just grapple yourself to a tree, hide, and stop shooting things for about 45 seconds, the AI will gradually forget about you. cos they're dumb.
ammo is a bummer since it only drops from badguys, and it can despawn pretty quickly if you're not watching. i'm not talented enough to use my grappling hook as a weapon. i think i need to use my black market dealer a little more often. i don't think he drops JUST ammo, but it does come with the weapons he'll bring me. i just hate leaving that brand new, perfectly good rifle on the ground.
but oh man, playing in an open modern world is wild, with planes and boats and cars and motorcycles and helicopters everywhere, available for you to hijack anytime you want. finding upgrade pieces at specific points on the map gives me the motivation to check stuff off of a to-do list, but the overall objective (to DESTROY STUFF), makes this game silly fun.
